Remaining

Remaining is a photography exhibition that commemorates the victims of political assassinations in Lebanon, from 2005 to this day. Through over one hundred black and white pictures captured by Édouard Elias, this project holds the memory of those who were taken by force: the families who carry the loss, the objects that keep presence alive, and the crime scenes that refuse to forget.

Remaining brings together 21 cases—political figures, civil servants, writers, journalists, and survivors of assassination attempts—with a special dedication to Lokman Slim. Throughout the course of our work, we met with families who agreed to open their doors and share their stories, while others preferred to remain silent—both were met with respect.

Focusing on the assassinations of the last two decades, Remaining sheds light on a period marked by the deliberate use of political killings to repress dissent, enforce obedience, and dictate Lebanon’s political landscape.

Together, these cases reveal how this ruthless tactic cuts across regions, sects, and communities. They also leave behind collateral victims, unseen in the exhibition, but not forgotten.

Remaining is a tribute to all the victims, those who survived, and those who continue to live with the weight of unanswered questions. It turns memory into an act of resistance, since political assassinations in Lebanon are not only about death, but about who controls the narrative and the future.
